Making It Happen

Global advisors are available both to help you explore which global and civic opportunities you’d like to do and to help you figure out how to make those opportunities happen. Make an appointment. This is a process individualized to your needs, but we do have some general pieces of advice:

When to start

It’s never too early to start thinking about global and civic opportunities, especially if you’re interested in away-from-Duke experiences. Visit a global advisor early and often!

For some populations, early planning will be critical. For example, prehealth students and engineers have packed schedules. While it is definitely possible for you to participate in global and civic experiences, it will take careful planning (See our Fitting It In page). Global advisors can work with you to sketch out your options.

But, it’s never too late!

Global advisors work with students across all four years. Don’t hesitate to come see us as your interests evolve or you discover new opportunities.

Be flexible

Even though we recommend considering your options early, you don’t have to work out a four-year plan during new student orientation! Leave yourself some room to be affected by your experience. As you complete classes or programs, your interests will grow and change. An away-from-Duke experience may lead you to do a senior thesis. A community service project with a co-curricular group may spur you to take a service-learning class. We’ll be happy to talk through your thoughts on new directions with you.
